The American Psychological Association (APA) accredited George Mason University (GMU) Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to focus on services for veterans in our training clinic, the GMU Center for Community Mental Health. This position is a 1-year, full time position, with potential for renewal.

George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.

About the Position:

This position will entail conducting independent medical evaluations for veterans with PTSD, substance use or other psychiatric disorders, in conjunction and coordination with our various legal partners (including the Virginia Department of Veteran Services). This fellow will also be available to provide evidence-based therapy services for veterans and their dependents. The fellow will complete three comprehensive assessments/independent medical evaluations per month, consult regularly with our legal partners, and see approximately 4 veteran-related therapy clients per week. Two supervisors, one who specializes in veteran testing, and one who has expertise in therapy for veterans, will provide supervision. Other optional opportunities for gaining experience in supervision or specialty areas exist, as does the opportunity to work with Mason’s Military Veterans and Families Initiative.

George Mason University is the largest, most diverse public research university in Virginia. The Clinical Psychology Program is committed to training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to meet the evolving roles of clinical psychologists in an evidence-based and antiracist framework. Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical psychology from an APA-accredited program by the start date of the position; completion of an APA-accredited predoctoral internship; and prior experience with both therapy and testing of veterans/military populations.  All degree requirements, including dissertation defense, must be completed prior to beginning fellowship.  The stipend for the 2024-2025 Fellowship year is $61,500.

Join our Center team to provide evidence-based therapy and testing services to the greater Washington DC community, with a focus on cultural sensitivity, accessibility, and equity. Our Postdoctoral Fellow will have an opportunity to gain experience working with young adults, particularly college aged clients. Specifically, the fellow will engage in comprehensive testing of college students with ADHD, anxiety, depression and other comorbidities, and assist in developing appropriate recommendations for college accommodations.  This will include consultation with our colleagues across George Mason University, as well as our psychiatric nurse practitioner.  Our Fellow will also learn and offer brief intervention services through our unique stepped care model (https://ccmh.gmu.edu/services) and provide evidence based therapy to young adults seen in our community based clinic.  Additional optional experiences include helping supervise doctoral students in our clinical science program or other community-based projects of interest.

Specifically, our Fellow will work at the CCMH full time, dividing your time between comprehensive testing and therapy for young adults.  The Fellow will complete approximately two comprehensive assessments per month, with a young adult/college age focus.  In addition, you will carry a caseload of approximately 4 clients for evidence based therapy, while reserving 2 hours/week for brief intervention clients.  You will have the opportunity to see a range of clients presenting with different issues, including clients who self identify with a range of identities.  There are additional opportunities to participate in monthly interdisciplinary case conferences with our psychiatric nurse practitioner colleagues who collaborate with us to provide sliding scale psychopharmacological services to our Center clients. This is a great opportunity to gain hours for licensure and hone both primary care and specialty care skills. Supervision will be provided by a minimum of two supervisors, one for testing and one for therapy.  All focus will be on young adults.

Responsibilities:

Join our Center team to provide evidence-based therapy and testing services to the greater Washington DC community, with a focus on cultural sensitivity, accessibility, and equity. Our Postdoctoral Fellow will have an opportunity to gain experience across settings – both in primary care and a community-based mental health center. Specifically, the fellow will engage in providing primary care behavioral health services at one or two of our partner pediatricians practices, as well as develop a combination of assessment and therapy hours at the Center. Should the Fellow be interested, additional opportunities are also available to supplement their experience, including helping supervise doctoral students in our clinical science program, gaining experience in our unique stepped care model of behavioral health (including learning and offering 3 session of BRIEF intervention), working in a pediatric endocrine practice or other community-based projects of interest.

Specifically, our Fellow will work 10-20 hours/week in our community partner pediatrics practice, providing short term, evidence-based therapy services as well as ongoing support to pediatricians, nurses and other providers. The Fellow will spend their additional time working at the GMU Center for Community Mental Health providing evidence-based testing and therapy services to children and adolescents (depending on preference). The Fellow will complete approximately two comprehensive assessments per month, with a child and/or adolescent focus.
